ID4 Outreach Areas

ID4 offers paid research internships and STEM experiences for students. Check out our programs for undergraduate/community college students and K-12 students.

ID4 also offers a Visiting Fellows program for researchers at any stage in their career who want to come work with us short term.

Undergraduate/Community College Programs

ID4 collaborates with existing Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) programs and other research programs at ID4 research group home institutions to provide additional summer research opportunities that are directed at ID4 research goals. Students will be paired with a professor and associated graduate student to conduct cutting-edge experimental or computational research. The following ID4 groups are currently accepting applications for undergraduate/community college research programs:

• Elif Ertekin (structural metamaterials) – University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
• Sossina Haile (ion transport) – Northwestern University
• Eric Toberer (ion transport) – Colorado School of Mines
• Diego Gomez-Gualdron (metal organic frameworks) – Colorado School of Mines
• Steven Lopez (computational chemistry) – Northeastern University 
• Jane Greenberg (knowledge extraction from text) – Drexel University

K-12 Programs

We are dedicated to educating, mentoring, and inspiring the next generation of students in computational and experimental science. ID4 member institutions run local and national programs for K-12 students. For more information about each program, click on the links below:

• Paid summer research experience for high school students – Northwestern University
• Unpaid, part-time computational research for high school students – Colorado School of Mines
• US Crystal Growing Competition – Nationwide 

Individual ID4 faculty also accept local high school students for paid and unpaid research experiences. If you are a high school student interested in working with a specific ID4 research group, please reach out to the ID4 faculty member directly.

Visiting Fellows Program

The Visiting Fellows Program serves to bring researchers from other universities/industry for extended, in-person collaborations. The goal of the Visiting Fellows Program is to foster new collaborations between ID4 and the broader scientific community; this can range from working with ID4 members on analysis of visiting fellow’s data to developing new algorithms or datasets collaboratively.
