Annual HDR Conference in 2023

We are soliciting proposals for Topical Sessions and Reflective Panels. Proposals are due August 29.

Submission Instructions

  • All abstracts must be submitted online via a Google form (see links in section descriptions). Please submit one proposal per entry. You are welcome to submit to both tracks (Topical Session and Reflective Panel). 
  • Abstract word limits are as follows:
    • 1000-words for topical session abstracts
    • 750-words for reflective panel abstracts (500-words for a brief summary of the panel 250-words for panelists’ bios and expertise)

Topical Sessions

Overview: The conference has dedicated time for several 2-hour Topical Sessions organized and run by participants. Participants can propose any topic of relevance to our overarching conference goal of fostering a coherent and sustainable HDR ecosystem. We welcome different types of topical sessions,including more technical content like hands on code/methods tutorials that converge data/computer science expertise that is transferable between teams; domain problem engagement that articulates open challenges and engages HDR-wide support. Example topics include, but are not limited to, data prediction, search methods, data modeling, interpretable AI, data visualization, data analysis, or data infrastructure and hardware. 

 Your proposal must contain each of the following (word limit: 1,000 words)

  • Topical Session title. (Example title: Using large language models to inform experimental design)
  • A list of proposers. For simplicity, this is also considered to be the list of chairpersons for the session, although specific roles of individuals can be described in your proposal narrative. For each proposer, include the person’s name, affiliation, HDR project involvement (if applicable), and email address. Note: the proposers must plan to be present in-person during the proposed Topical Session.
  • Overview of the proposed Topical Session that includes a description of the motivation and alignment with objectives of the 2023 HDR Ecosystem Conference. 
  • Primary objectives of the proposal Topical Session.
  • Description of the target audience. 
  • Proposed session format, activities, and schedule. Describe how the session will be organized. Presenters will explain the strategies they will use to engage session attendees.
  • Deliverables from the session and plans for follow up after the session.

Reflective Panel

Overview: Harnessing the Data Revolution is one of NSF’s Ten Big Ideas. As part of the HDR research community, how has your work advanced the frontier of discovery? How has your research moved the needle in your specific area? What achievement you have attained that the whole community should be proud of? Furthermore, what is next on the horizon that  you are excited about? 

Each reflective panel will be one-hour long and organized as 10-min/presentations for each panelist, followed by a moderated conversation and Q&A with the audience.

Unlike the call for Topical Sessions with an emphasis on technical expertise, this call for reflective panels has an emphasis on the “meta” aspect of your work. We welcome submissions that are philosophical, reflective, and geared towards the general HDR audience who are not necessarily intimately familiar with the technical details of your field. 

Each panel is limited to a maximum of four panelists from different HDR entities (Institutes, DSCs, TRIPODS), or other synergistic data intensive research efforts, such as the AI Institutes. 

We welcome two types of submissions: 

  1. Self-assembled panel – Propose your theme and assemble a panel on your own 
  2. Assisted-assembly panel – Propose your theme and specify the types of panelists you would like the planning committee to help you identify and assemble.

The following information must be included for the panel abstracts (word limit: 750)

  • Panel title (Example titles:  Overcoming data scarcity with physics-informed AI, The art of harnessing geospatial data)
  • Self-assembled panel: all author(s) identifying information, including names, emails, degrees, HDR affiliations and short bios (250 words maximum)
  • Assisted-assembly panel: a list of requirements for potential panelists
  • Abstract text (500-words maximum), please include statements about the theme of the panel and significance to the HDR community
  • 3 to 5 keywords
